There are definitely some copyright issues in using the logo without permission, so I suggest you make your own "Validation" badges or use text (which is what at least 90% of the people doing this use).

If you really want to do something graphical, then my advice is
to approach it in the same manner as site design. Make it interesting.
Make it stand out (or not, if that makes more sense).

You're right though, if they had some quality official badges that didn't stick out like a sore thumb, I'd probably use them alot more often. :)
