I'm wondering if there's some easy (and free) way to convert text from a WORD document into clean XHTML that retains the formatting.

htmltidy can do a great work about that. Personally I use ktmlkit to invoque tidy. I has various predefined filters who in conjuntion can clean pretty well any word generated html
