Hi,
This is exactly what I had in mind, thanks. to clarify my understanding an 8-bit png doesn't have an alpha channel, so transparency is derived the same as gif, from a solid color. However, the 24-bit png has an alpha channel specifying transparency?

Provide an 8 bit fallback PNG for IE, set as default background, and then use some CSS that IE doesn't understand (e.g. using child selectors) to set the background to the 24 bit one instead.
Not really an answer to your question, but this could nonetheless give you an idea of what I'm talking about http://www.splintered.co.uk/experiments/19/
Assuming that you do actually need a 24 bit one...
