Am blushing as I report that when I removed ALL the hacks, the site stayed the same and it now validates perfectly. I think those hacks came from a very early attempt at css and I just kept putting them into stylesheets. I haven't tested in older browsers yet but it looks OK in current ones.
No problem, I've been there myself. Next to writing CSS rules, deleting them can also prove to be very enlightening. ;-)
