I agree with the fact that we should take advantage of whatever the technology offers us, but we should not do that for the sake of doing so.

As someone mentioned before, Flash has its own advantages and disadvantages, just like CSS and HTML. But building a site entirely in Flash is a sign of pure immaturity. Don't get me wrong, presentational and experimental sites are true leaps in design and technology, I remember the amazing DerBauer sites when I was just popping out my ideas on design a few years ago.

The true quality of a site lies in the correct and logical use of whatever the technology used. A hybrid Flash & CSS+HTML site is, at a point, a sign of maturity in design. Combining the elements, finding the right solutions to presentational problems is what sets good designers apart from bad designers.

Anyways, I think this post is going a little off-topic. Sorry if I bored anyone with my two cents :)

Cheers,
Clau

Can anyone who is really interested in web 'design' say that a site such as:

http://www.fosterandpartners.com/internetsite/Flash.html

'sucks'? It certainly isn't standards material (it doesn't even have a
doctype!) but the 'concept' is glorious. A mass of information, all
available via a small 'box' which fits in an 800 by 600 window.
Compare that with a typical cluttered 3-column layout with a graphics
banner, text all over the place etc etc.

I agree with your last point Web pages is still looking as Quark Layout and
designer won't change the way of working even there is a better way to do
layout and keeping standard. The design is like fashion some Guru give the
mood and every one follows.
That's what is happening with the web. This kind of site you mention can be
done with CSS2 DOM and HMTL much easier they says. The problem is that
people is stack with CSS and don't want to look to the capacity of DOM.
That's my big challenge try to convert people to DOM. Rest assured, I you
work with care there is no such big problem between ie DOM and firefox DOM.
Opera have still not accept a part of the DOM Style.
As I said in my previous post, we have to think pages as object and not as
text that why w3 have created position absolute, z-index not only to add
functionnality but to have the possibility to layout with out being stack
by the hierarchy of the page.
Time is coming to change the way of thinking and we must stop having this
approach wich start with the web " less was more and worse was better" and
start using technologies the right way to give us the opportunity to change
the web's look.
