There are cases where a default is a bad thing, and you need to be able to handle forms with no answer, rather than providing a default.
In another example, providing a default may slant your responses in favour of the default, because respondents think that's the answer you're wanting. Ever-obliging they tend to give the answer they think the questioner wants.
