The abbr element isn't supported by IE, so isn't present in IE's DOM. I think this is one of the main reasons why a lot of developers use acronym, regardless of whether it's an acronym or an abbreviation. Even though it's not in IE's DOM, JAWS can still get at it. As to other resistive devices that interact with IE; I've no idea.
