I can't say as I've ever come across any problems with embedding style directives in emails, even with quite extensive style guides. The main consideration seems to be the overall size of the email, and obviously the larger your style declaration is, the larger the email will be. That said, the style declaration may well reduce the overall size of the email by removing superfluous inline styles.
