Grrr ... our friend IE - gotta love it!
I amended the paragraph declarations like so:
.left p, .right p {
padding:4px 0 8px 0;
margin:0 0 4px 0;
text-align:center;
font:bold .8em/.8em verdana, arial, sans-serif;
color:#666;
}

Although now I'm rather liking the "put it all in a paragraph" idea ... less
