For some reason, I feel I have to escape every character that is not a letter or number.
I was feeling the same, and working on it, when this thread arrived. At the time it appeared I was looking up numeric entity lists in Cyrillic and adapting them to a conversion_map function (for PHP). I was arriving at the conclusion that it was completely crazy to go this route...because Chinese was on the horizon.
