Perhaps put the space in the alt *attribute* if you get display problems with the space.

Also, if you are going to put captions under the photo, I think it's perfectly reasonable to use an empty alt attribute. Doesn't the caption take its place anyway?
Or for that matter, Bert-- if you're going to use a caption, why not get rid of the photo, too?
