Should be no need for the span if you do this:

.lfigure img { display:block }

<p class="lfigure"><img />Caption</p>

And maybe it should be a div rather than a p(aragraph).  To float
the paragraph (or div), add a width to .lfigure and give it a
float:left or float:right as appropriate.
