I agree with Peter, the float:left, float:right is the easiest way to handle this situation. Play around with the percentages to get the right amount of space between the columns, but give yourself some slop factor to avoid any problems with the two columns not fitting. You could also float the container to avoid the clear:both from throwing off any future floated columns.
