Hmm, until I read that part, I was going to say "just set the encoding to UTF-8, no BOM", because I had exactly the same problem using BBEdit, and solved it that way.

When you say you've set "prefs", have you used the "options" button in the Save dialog box to set the encoding? That's what I did.

Well, yes - in BBEdit Preferences, if you set 'UTF-8, no BOM' as the default for 'Text Files: Saving', that's how files are saved. You can then use the Options button in the Save dialog to override this on a file-by-file basis...
