SINGLE IMAGE vs MULTIPLE IMAGES
A single image loads faster than the same cut into separate images.

At last...I thought I was the only one in the know with this tiny yet often misunderstood piece of info. It only gives the illusion to be faster to the user (questionably) because there's at least some bits and bobs appearing onscreen over a slow connection, rather than having to wait for the entire thing...but it is indeed quicker overall to just have a single image.
