I used to use .Text and hacked the code to output standards compliant code with moderate success. ASP.NET 1.1 wasn't inherently designed with standards in mind (2.0 has though), but there are a few articles floating around to fix that (e.g., http://www.aspnetresources.com/articles/HttpFilters.aspx).
