I would recommend starting with Domscripting by Jeremy Keith. Then, follow with DHTML Utopia, I don't remember the author of DHTML Utopia.
Jeremy has the ability to make scripting understandable to a visual designer. DHTML Utopia goes more in-depth but can be hard to read for a beginner. I had to re-read sections several times.
