HI Kay I'd check out a Plesk demo and look under the hood - probably the best bet. Or just install it on a demo site and see what happens.
One of the gripes I have is that 90+% of these off the shelf systems hand you a frontend and a backend in one inseparable lot. It would be great to have an application say "here's the data you requested from the backend, present it yourself if you like"...
