They do have their place on the web, but they're certainly not for sending graphics.

I've recieved the wrong file format from clients previously, it usually just takes a quick e-mail to get the right ones from them. Just ask for the original image files, they should have them in a format like suitable for Photoshop, Fireworks, CorelDraw, GIMP, or whatever app they used to create them.
