Usually if an image is among a list or table of images; when it's small and the border changes when I mouseover then that's enough of a guide for me. Disabled people, particularly those with poor eyesight who want a larger version anyway, would probably understand the layout and some good ALT text like Joes suggestion.

btw. It doesn't look like any of the CSS cursors would be an appropriate prompt.
