I stand corrected.
Must be time to by a new copy of the OED - 'Initialism' isn't in my carbon-sink 
copy! 

These definitions do seem much clearer than M-W was, but then I have never been 
impressed with them.

Fantastic!  This is exactly the sort of reference I was looking
for--but I was unable to find a version of the OED through which I
could search.

If the OED says it, I'll buy it.  Thanks, Nick!
