Not causing validation issues does not make them "fine"; even if the vast majority of user agents don't respect it, <img /> in an HTML document means "An image element followed by a greater than sign". The HTML specification explicitly advises authors to avoid them: http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/appendix/notes.html#h-B.3.7
