The IE7 beta worked as a standalone until the first Release Candidate came out. I presume IE8 will do the same.
Am trying now, but you need to have a fully patched machine (I'm behind a firewall so our patches are usually pushed out a bit later ) to install it - so be warned that the installer may require security patch updates to complete.
