Your solution should work ;) try your approach again - but write out the
list item and class without the space in your css, like this:

#navlist li.furniture a

I've used that on this site here : http://magsbrolly.co.uk/
(the CSS is a little clumsy (done ages ago while learning wordpress) and
uses wordpress generated classes - but you should be able to see what I mean
:)
