Both are not perfect but at least I can tell it's my limited mileage
that couldn't get it done  than it can't be done :-)
I still need to tested it further due to the complexity of how data
are pulled to the cart page (e.g. if a customer is logged in, it will
show extra  col for add to wishlist, and if tax is enable, it adds
extra col within one of the td cell.

We still need to support IE6, so it seems Kepler's method is more
compatible. I tested this yesterday directly, but wouldn't get the
td's borders joins to make a box.


This has been an intriguing problem! If your cell height is constant, you can make one table and insert a background border (that doesn't quite fit) in the appropriate cells. See here:

It works, it is cross browser compatible (as far as I can check) and it validates. It keeps everything simple, too! It's only rough, but I just wanted to see if I could do it!
