I am guessing that you are using Ubuntu with the Unity desktop 
interface. The Ubuntu distro messes with the menus of Qt applications in 
a way that is not helpful.

Try:

sudo apt-get purge appmenu-qt

to remove the menu interference to Qt5 applications by Ubuntu.
