Hi Alan, With respect to Debian and Ubuntu, python3-pil provides python3-pillow (apt-cache show python3-pil). Python Pillow is a fork of PIL (Python Imaging Library). Python3-pillow, in Ubuntu, is virtual package, it only install dependencies. When using pip/pip3, Pillow is the package name that gets installed. The pip/pip3 version is also a fork of PIL. A quick Google search will explain the difference in much more detail.
I've been looking into this since trouble began on WSJT. The problem is the combination of python3-imagetk (python3-pil.imagetk 2.3.0) and python3-pil 2.6.1, as they are closely integrated. The errors manifest themselves as an python3-pil issue, but I think python3-imagetk (python3-pil-imagetk) is actually the problem. It is possible that python3-tk is also a concern. To verify this, you could build python3-imagetk (python3-pil.imagetk) against python3-pil 2.6.1, but you'll need Tcl/Tk8.6-dev and the other PIL dependencies installed in order to do so. I think once the python3--pil.imagetk package has been updated ( built against ) python-pil 2.6.1, then back ported to 14.04, things will be ok again, but this needs further testing, particularly on Utopic / Jessie. Using pip / pip3 should only be done in a virtualenv or for a quick test, otherwise you risk breaking dependencies between python site-packages. On Ubuntu / Debian, where python2 is used extensively in the base install, using pip can lead to all kinds of trouble if allowed to modify system python modules. On infrastructure server builds ( Launchpad, Debian build servers = .deb / PPA packaging) you cannot use pip to install package dependencies as most of them are from the pypi.python.prg repositories, which is not an authorized site for unattended chroot builds.
