If the issue originally reported last year was not directly addressed, then perhaps by selection of font, descender characters have been rendering correctly here. I have Monospace Bold 8 set as the Decoded text font and Sans Regular 8 as the program font. This is with 1.5.0-devel r 4964 on Archlinux. It has been a long time since I adjusted fonts, and therefore don't remember if this rendering problem was fixed by way of font selection or by some code revision along the way....
