My mistake. I have two other applications open (Winwarbler and MixW) and I was seeing signals on their waterfalls. Your correct, with WSJT-X monitor off its waterfall stops.

My seeing JT65/JT9 signals on the other waterfalls, prompts me to start WSJT-X, and click monitor with the resulting Band change. I am rarely on the same band as when I last used WSJT-X. I'm a DXer and am frequently on other bands/modes. Having to check the WSJT-X band dropdown even when it is already correctly reporting the correct band, just to avoid a band change when enabling the monitor function is not intuitive.

While it is only a mouse click, to a user it is not obvious why there is the need to use the dropdown when it is already reporting the current band. There is nothing on the WSJT-X gui to indicate that the monitor button may initiate a band change. Monitor to my mind means start listening to the signals for eventual decode not generate a band change.
