Joe,

Thanks for this.
There appears to be an inconsistency in the handling of the UDP reply packet depending on how the message is transmitted, as a TX6 or TX5 (free text).

From my tests with 7289 decoding...

 * "CQ AA VK3AMA QF22" is correctly decoded, highlighted green and
correctly responds to a UDP reply packet. Good!

 * "CQ AA VK3AMA" sent as a free-text message, which is how most (I
assume) are sending these type of CQs, is correctly decoded,
highlighted in green, BUT fails to respond to the UDP reply packet.

Hi all,

With code revision 7289 I have implemented support for messages of the
form "CQ AA" through "CQ ZZ". They are encoded by sending "E9AA"
through "E9ZZ" for the first callsign. Upon reception these calls are
converted back to the form "CQ AA" through "CQ ZZ".

For consistency, "CQ DX" is still encoded as "CQ9DX".

Some confusion will necessarily arise because users of older versions of
software will start to see callsigns like "E9EU", "E9NA", "CQ VT", etc.,
on their screens.

Of course, in principle users who have not upgraded their software can
do some mental translations to make QSOs with stations using the new
feature. Such users should interpret a received "E9xx" as "CQ xx". To
call "CQ xx" they can send "E9xx <MyCall> <MyGrid>".

But at the time of our next release, we should strongly encourage users
to upgrade.

It's likely that some users who are building WSJT-X for themselves,
using source code in our development branch, will start using the new
feature before any wider announcement is made. Be on the lookout for
queries about strange 4-character callsigns "E9AA" through "E9ZZ".
