Hi Mike,

we use the SourceForge project files server to serve sample files, this 
is extremely handy as it is fast and is mirrored worldwide and is free. 
SourceForge quite sensibly use secure servers so the http requests are 
redirected to https by the server. These days this is the way of most 
web servers due to the prevalence of hackers and governments who would 
like to snoop and interfere with web traffic.

Have you tried installing the correct OpenSSL libraries? Did that help?
