Last night Charlie G3WDG and I did some 24 GHz tests on QRA D to compare with 
JT4f.  I used r7375.

We completed QSOs on both modes which is the first time we have done this when 
I have been operating from home (with a restricted window) and our first 24 GHz 
QRA QSO.  These QSOs are also the second longest 24 GHz contacts ever completed 
and were much easier than the 62 km longer World Record 24 GHz contact.

 

Spreading was around 95 Hz. Lunar degradation was only 0.2 dB.  The Moon became 
visible through clouds after the first two periods of the JT4f  test and was 
clear of clouds for the QRA D tests and thus cloud loss would have been 
improving.  PW was not all that low, 16.4 mm at my end and 15.5 mm at 
Nottingham near Charlie.

 

Below are the decodes at the time and show that while JT4f required DS all the 
time, QRA generally got through with RC=0, (no prior knowledge) and in two 
cases RC=3, which looks very promising for QRA.

50% decoding is around 3 dB degradation on JT4f and around 4 dB on QRA D.  JT4f 
produced one false decode and QRA D none.

 

CONCLUSION

While I was very excited by the excellent QRA D results on 24 GHz it is 
difficult to say that there is a definite advantage over JT4f as the cloud loss 
was reducing at my end over the test.  Nevertheless a very promising result for 
QRA on 24 GHz.
