But are we going to create a 1.8 branch? Or put new features in to 1.7.1?

Hi Mike,

you are confusing branches with versions and tags. A v1.8 branch would only be created when v1.8 needs to diverge from the main line, that is a long way in the future, probably around the time the first v1.8.0 GA release is dropped.

A branch for a v1.7 code line can be created retrospectively by copying the v1.7.0 GA tag, so we only need create it if something urgently needs to be released due to a defect in v1.7.0 GA. At that point we can decide if v1.7 needs to diverge from the main line. If and when a v1.7 branch is created, changes can be cherry picked from the main line across to it if necessary.

Making branches too early means extra work integrating changes between them so we will work on the main line until we cannot do that any more.
