Hi all,
Like Jim, Last winter (our VK summer), I left JT65 running on 160m into a
1/4 wave vertical while I slept.
Many nights 20 - 40 decodes resulted, sometimes lots more.
During the 2 hours before sunrise each morning I was also able to work 35
countries on 160m. Taking my total to almost 50 confirmed.
Many decodes where quite strong (-01 to -12) but many where in the -20
to -28 range, and many more not quite enough power to make it.
My feeling is that with this experience & some FT8 experience recently, that
JT65 will be the main mode for 160m certainly for long haul. As FT8 decoding
specs increase this could change.
I would expect an increase in activity also on 160m on both JT65 & FT8 as
many realise that as long as one of the 2 stations has a good 160m setup
that QSOs between VK and W, VK and EU are quite possible with simple
antennas.
thanks
Steve

Last winter, I often let JT65 run overnight, mostly using my TX vertical
as the antenna, and the next morning, put the stations I logged into a
spreadsheet. In about 4 months, I logged >950 different stations, in 49
states (not VT), most VE provinces, all continents except AN, and about
20 countries. 3-4 nights a week, I copied VK6IR, near Perth. I also
logged VK3EW, VK4CAG, and VK5PO. One night when I switched to the VK
Beverage, VK6IR was at -1 dB. On a typical night, I logged at least 30
calls, often more, and except during major contests, there was ALWAYS
far more JT65/JT9 activity than all other modes combined.
