I have also seen this happen from time to time on my XP64 platform. I attributed it to ancient, potentially unstable hardware, but maybe not. When this happens to me, the program itself becomes unresponsive and won't do anything until it's closed and restarted, frequently requiring the task manager to kill it.

I have also had problems with the program crashing on occasion and closes itself, and Windows asks if I want to sent MS a crash report. When this happens, restarting the program resumes without problems.
