Jim Wilson, AC8NT, suggested a Field Day mod was bandied about several

article/doc/link/etc for the mod? Or, a different forum?

There's not much I can add to what has been emphasized a number of times
here and on other WSJT user forums.
The structured JT-style messages in modes supported by WSJT-X are
designed for making minimal QSOs exchanging signal reports, locators,
and not much else.
You can send FD message exchanges as free text (max 13 characters), but
not with auto-sequencing capabilities and other operational
conveniences. Not really recommended.
More useful message formats and procedures for contests, etc., might be
built into a future version of WSJT-X. No good for this year's Field
Day, however.
