Maybe just one 8 or 16-bit value with bits set to different indicators 
perhaps?That would allow for future expansion without expanding the message.

 Excellent suggestion.
 Adding if WSJT-X is set to NA Contest mode would also be a worthwhile addition 
to the Status reporting message IMO.
