Not so sure free form messaging using FT8 or a JT mode where the software automatically sent the typed in messages in 13ch bursts would not prove useful - FT8 speed would probably be in the 8-10wpm range and far better than FLDIGI mode decoding I have experienced - I have not tried them all and realize the FT/JT drops un-decoded messages instead of showing bogus characters.
The FT8 and JT current message character lengths and cycle times could probably be improved to raise free-form (like psk) wpm tx rates while retaining similar-to-current decode performance. > Date: Thu, 28 Jun 2018 09:43:01 +0100 > From: Bill Somerville <g4...@classdesign.com> > To: wsjt-devel@lists.sourceforge.net > Subject: Re: [wsjt-devel] Field Day (and Other) Contest Capability > > > ………………..Certainly some sort of alternative > protocol layer could be added using encoded 13-character free text > messages (you would probably have to avoid standard message forms > somehow) but the rate of data exchange would probably be too slow for > practical use other than maybe for telemetry of some sort.
