For what it is worth I have found it quite easy to manually sync the time on a 
tablet PC / laptop while operating from remote locations.   It is usually quite 
obvious when a re sync is needed while running FT8 on 50 MHz for example.   I'm 
still considering getting a GPS synced (with hold over to handle GPS signal 
loss) NTP server for my truck based roving and for back packing I like to keep 
things as light and simple as possible.   Time sync is low on my list of open 
issues regarding portable / roving use of the JT modes.

I usually re sync when I see a significant number of "DT" reports of .5 of a 
second or more.
