Sorry, but you are not right.

In my opinion ESC key od main feature, starting from ham spirit to the day by 
day  operation.

In voice operation you have PTT.
In digital operation you must have easiest as possibile way, to stop transmiton.

If you hit ESC by mistake, it is your and only your problem/mistake.

If you transmit in wrong time, wrong format, you disturb signal all over the 
world's and disturb other HAMs.

You also can overload your radio or fire it and need to stop transmission 
immediatelly.
Other HAMs can have not so reliable and perfect radio, as you have.

Reassumming, ESC is the main feature in the HAMs world, based on ham spirit.
