Hi Jim,

6-digit grids are used for azimuth and bearing calculations and only the WSPR protocol has a mechanism for sending them by splitting the beacon message over two transmission periods. The other modes use 4-digit grid squares in their standard messages.

As far as we know there is no requirement to exchange 6-digit grids except perhaps on the millimetre bands with extremely high gain aerials.
