If you didn't double click to get on his frq, you really weren't on his
freq. Single click moves rx, double click moves both.

What I think happened was you single clicked (and stayed on your prior tx
freq), so, when he answered someone else, you continued to call him (but
off his rx freq), which is "good". He might see you for the next qso, hence
my queue comment.
