As previously mentioned, you should be using configurations to
manage this. There should be NO frequencies listed in your
DXpedition configuration except those of the current
expeditions. When a new one comes along, you should remove all
others and add the new one. There should be no confusion then.
The idea of using configurations to manage the difference
between normal FT8 and expedition mode FT8 is a good one. It
makes it less likely that you will be using the wrong mode.
However, for those of us who like to scan the bands, it just
doesn't fly. When I look at the band on my P3, it is easy to
recognize FT8 signals by their timing. When I see some signals
outside the normal FT8 band of frequencies -- easily identified
by the many signals marching in time -- I will tune to that
frequency. Fox/hound is easy to recognize with many stations
calling the same station all above 1000 Hz in odd frames and
that station in an even frame on 280 Hz to 620 Hz. (There's some
slop in the audio frequencies used.) I assume the base frequency
has a lot of trailing zeros.
Ideally, I would be able to just leave the radio tuned to the
base frequency without making an entry for it in the frequencies
table, but wsjt-x seems to want to change the base frequency if
there isn't an entry in the frequency table. I just let those
entries accumulate in the table. I don't get slowed down by
having to add them, and life is good.
Note I'm not dependent on the DX having a web presence, or
remembering to list its base frequencies. I certainly don't need
to know what station it is before starting to work it.
