I would certainly hope that you would want it for your personal safety, and for the non-destruction of your home and your equipment! It also happens that proper bonding of equipment, and obtaining power for all interconnected equipment from outlets that share the same green wire, minimizes hum, buzz, and RFI. That is the focus of my advice.

Another observation. The prevalence of lightning varies widely around the world, as shown on this map. Those of living in high frequency strike areas pay a lot more attention to it than do others.
