It wasn't exactly what you suggested because I had long ago disabled each specific audio device for each monitor (I have dual head on this machine). But your suggestion got me to revisit audio related to the video connection again and this time I disabled the "Intel Display Audio" interface which is the thing that actually presents an audio interface to the OS that uses the HDMI interface. This appears, for now, to have solved it! I've gone into screen blank and back out half a dozen times and WSJT-X is still sending audio to the radio so that is very helpful! We'll see if it persists through an OS update, which have a tendancy to re-enable things which have been disabled previously but I think this is very hopeful.
