I tried that but nothing there so a reboot was the only option.

As you already mentioned, this can have several reasons. My tip: If you are working on Windows, just open the task manager in such a case. Most likely, you will see a hanging wsjtx.exe or jt9.exe process. Close this process manually and WSJT-X should start again.
