Hey Hugh! Glad to see you here. Here's my take. We need a consistent abstraction with how to handle native events - windows, clicking, etc. This is a really good question. There are native events coming out in Webdriver which are exposed through watir-webdriver as they come out, there's still a lot of missing components.
For the current version of Watir we could use Rautomation, it gives us some leeway in translating the calls. I'm talking about it on IRC now.
