This is a great idea. Several others have also looked into this and threatened to write an implentation, but no one has yet to dive it. It would be great to see you take a stab and this and share what you learn, whether it be the start of an implementaiton or notes on what is difficult. There are many people in the open source community who mostly like Watir, except for the fact that is tied to proprietary technology. I completely agree and would be eager to work on developing a plug in interface that separated and connected the existing Watir test API from its currnet IE/COM driver interface.
