Perhaps the Jeff's proposal should be considered,

Watir 1.5 will have a click method that will not only
fail to block in your scenario, but will also fail to block when raising modal
dialogs (a case where your code will still block).
Right now (in my
uncommitted code) this is called "click_no_wait". Comments please on the best
name for this method. Is "click_nonblocking" better? How about
"click_dammit!"?
