If I remember correctly, this was part of a larger thread, and they were simply providing examples in the context of the code snippets provided.  So, the $ie was simply part of that code, and Bret was just providing an answer that could work for non-globals, as well.

Nice method, from what I can gather #instance_eval is pre-fixing self on
the custom methods. But why are you passing a global into the constructor?
